You know, it’s interesting how much of the flesh life—our soulish self—goes undetected by us, or if not undetected, at least ignored and tolerated. But if we belong to God nothing goes undetected for long. In His perfect timing, He sheds light upon it and all is exposed. What a great work of God in the human soul!
Hiding is impossible with God. Isn’t that good news? Our Glorious Headmaster is relentless and unyielding in His pursuit of us. He earnestly desires to teach His pupils the skill of unearthing pride from its dark, damp corners. Pride really is the ugliest of sins, the original sin of all others.
A few years ago, I was visiting someone at their “tucked-in-the-woods” rustic cabin. The place was beautiful—a perfect home in the forest. As we walked into their living room, I could not believe my eyes though. There in the middle of the room was a huge granite boulder. Not a little rock, but a boulder. You couldn’t miss it! Standing back and taking everything in, I realized that their entire cabin had been built around that rock. The wood floor was tightly crafted around the circumference of the crusty granite. Furniture was placed so as to accommodate its presence. Everything about the cabin centered around that boulder—it was adaptation at its best. What a novelty!
Well, pride is like a boulder in the middle of our life. We accommodate its presence; make allowances for it; navigate around it, but the reality is it’s a huge boulder-size problem. The best thing that can happen in the Christian is that pride gets unearthed—exposed, revealed and plucked from its lofty position. And that’s the mighty work of God and He wastes nothing to bring us to a place of humility… “…God is opposed to the proud, but gives grace to the humble” 1 Peter 5:5.
Whenever the Lord brings a word to my attention, I want to respond. And such is the case with this topic of pride and humility. I am seeing more pride than I’d like to admit, but I’m receiving more grace than I deserve! May He continue to expose and unearth pride in me….for His glory!
